About Ghana

Ghana is one of the 54 countries in Africa. It is located in the Gulf of Guinea, only a few degrees north of the Equator. The Greenwich Meridian Line passes through the port city of Tema, a suburb of the nation’s capital, Accra. This accounts for its warm climate. Ghana is bordered to the south by the Atlantic Ocean, west by La Cote d’Ivoire, east by Togo and north by Burkina Faso. These are all French-speaking countries. Ghana’s population size is approximately 29.6million (World Bank 2018). There are over 100 ethnic groups. Over 250 languages and dialects are spoken. English is the official language. The most widely spoken local language is Twi – the language of the Akan people. Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, is famous for its gold, Kwame Nkrumah its founding President, historical sites like the Cape Coast and Elmina slave dungeons, rich culture of festivals and traditions, friendly and hospitable people.

While most visitors to Ghana are tourists, the number of business visitors is on the rise. This is fueled by the many investment opportunities which are available. Opportunities exist in areas such as Agriculture, Tourism, Education, Conferencing and the Arts.

In 2019, Ghana initiated the “Year of Return” for Africans living in the Diaspora. This was an invitation for them to return to the land of their ancestors who were sold into slavery.  In the same year, under a Presidential Initiative, One hundred and Twenty-six (126) Diasporans already living in Ghana had their citizenship restored to them. This number adds to the Thirty-four (34) who received their citizenship in 2016. Ghana has now titled the next ten years, “Beyond the Return” with the theme “A decade of African Renaissance – 2020-2030”. This will be built on 7 pillars. This initiative is meant to encourage more Africans in the diaspora to come and experience Ghana, participate in the country’s development and explore the possibility of fully returning home.

Whether you are seeking to experience the beauty and culture, connect with your roots, repatriate or do business, Ghana offers you a peaceful, safe and friendly environment in which to do so. Visit Ghana today! AKWAABA!!

About Our Founder

Maisie Howell is the founder and Experience Curator at Meet Ghana Love Ghana. She was born in Jamaica and now lives in Ghana where she came to work twenty-five years ago. During this time Maisie has travelled to all the sixteen regions of Ghana and has built strong connections with the people in each region. She has served on several committees such as the Emancipation Planning Committee, board member of the Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust, and is a current board member of the PANAFEST Foundation.
Travelling is one of Maisie’s passions. She loves to travel and explore new places, cultures, and experiences. She enjoys listening to the stories of people, places, and practices. She says, “this puts seemingly strange customary practices in perspective” for her. She is always ready to explain the “why” to anyone who is ready to listen.
Maisie believes that every Diasporan owes it to themselves to visit Africa at least once in their lifetime. She is inviting you to make that visit to Ghana. Many persons who have visited make statements like “now I am complete”, this is where I belong”, “now I know who I am”, “I have never seen so many people who look like me in one place before. This is home.”
One of Maisie’s beliefs is that we should all strive to leave a legacy for the next generation. And so, along her Tour routes, she seeks out opportunities to make contributions to communities in areas such as education, health, or other areas of development. She encourages her clients to participate in these initiatives.
Her work in the different sectors of Ghana and her involvement in national life has made Maisie the “go-to” person for information and experiences on Ghana.
